Examine Jewish underground organizations during the British Mandate, including the Haganah, Irgun (Etzel), and Lehi (Stern Group), and their evolution before and after the establishment of Israel. Explore the ideologies of Jewish self-defense, independence, and national survival that shaped the struggle for state- hood and their continuing influence on Israeli society and politics. The course discusses contemporary ideological movements within the settler community in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), their views on self-defense and the use of force, and their broader implications for Israeli democracy and society, including ongoing debates over the boundaries of legitimate force and retaliation.
