In this course, we will explore the rich history and customs in which Jewish communities throughout the world dress, protect and adorn the Torah scroll. The first two classes will be dedicated to the evolution of Torah garments and their attributes from earliest known finds that accompanied the Dead Sea scrolls discovery in the 1950s until today’s art projects and designer-makers commissions.
Our third class will be a tour of the Judaica Gallery at the Maltz Museum, focused on the magnificent Torah mantles, cases, and adornments from the collection of Congregation Mishkan Or.
