For the last 109 years, The Best American Short Stories arrives annually to remind us of the pleasures of short fiction. Series editor Heidi Pitlor reads a year’s worth of stories published in literary and mainstream periodicals then asks a distinguished guest author to choose his/her favorites. We’ll read the 20 stories Lauren Groff (author of Fates and Furies, Florida, and The Vaster Wilds) selected for the 2024 edition. Our goal? To discover their commonalities, to reflect on their differences, and to think deeply about what these stories – collectively – say about life in America in the 21st century.
