Among the Emerald Isle’s wonderful assets are centuries of storytelling and storytellers. In this course, we’ll use the 2026 Everyman’s Library Pocket Classic Series anthology Irish Stories to read and discuss 200 years of short fiction. We’ll move chronologically from early folkloric tales through classic works by James Joyce, Frank O’Connor, Maeve Brennan, and Edna O’Brien before settling in for some contemporary stories by Anne Enright, Colm Tóibín, Claire Keegan, Roddy Doyle, and Sally Rooney. As winter turns to spring, we’ll gather glimmers of brilliance, and by St. Patrick’s Day, we’ll all be wiser.
