Washington Irving is best known for his enduring romantic tales Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. However, his six-decade career produced a remarkable range of works, including biographies, essays, observational letters, romantic histories, satires, and short stories. His writing, infused with humor, romance, and satire, played a pivotal role in shaping the Romantic Movement in American literature and contributed significantly to the formation of a national identity.
