Ever since Freud introduced his theories, scholars and mental health professionals have been psychoanalyzing Shakespeare’s villains and tragic characters. In this course, we will examine a cross section of psychological interpretations of his characters from the early twentieth century through today—and perhaps posit some of our own. Although we will refer to many of Shakespeare’s plays throughout the month, the four we will focus upon are: Julius Caesar, Pericles, Macbeth, and Othello.
