In Kentucky Poet Laureate Silas House’s award-winning 2019 novel Southernmost, the floods that devastate the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee are just the beginning of the storms in the novel. In the aftermath of natural disaster, Pastor Asher Sharp provides shelter to a gay couple, leading to more storms within his evangelical Christian church. The novel follows Pastor Sharp as he flees his life as it falls apart to a new community in Key West, where he must make tough decisions. The novel will be supplemented by materials about House, Appalachian Studies generally, and LGBTQ Appalachian literature specifically.
