Flannery O’Connor’s debut novel, Wise Blood (1952) tells the story of Hazel Motes, a soldier returning home from war who discovers that he has no home. In this weird, southern gothic novel, Motes takes up preaching a “Church without Christ,” encountering a menagerie of odd characters such as Sabbath Lily Hawkes, daughter of self-blinded street corner preacher, and Enoch Emery, a lonely young man who claims to be guided by his own “wise blood.”
