Is “the news” of 2025 the same as “the press” envisioned in 1791? Are all news stories of equal importance, and is every piece of information truly “breaking”? Is there a conflict between the press’s desire to report a story and an individual’s right to privacy when they become the focus of that story? In this course, we will examine the language of the First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution and explore landmark Supreme Court cases as our guide. We will also analyze selected current events to determine whether the right to a free press remains the same today as it was in the past.
