The Book of Esther is often associated with joyful, carnival-like celebration, with costumes, festivities, and the traditional drowning out of Haman’s name. Yet beneath its humor lies a darker story of persecution, political vulnerability, and a threatened Jewish community. We will explore the Book of Esther alongside its post-biblical interpretations and retellings, considering how the story has shaped Jewish understandings of life in the Diaspora, and the enduring tensions between vulnerability and resilience, assimilation and identity, power and survival. At the heart of our exploration is a compelling question: Is Esther a comic heroine or a tragic one?
