In 1947, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver commissioned 15 stained-glass windows for The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Cleveland, commemorating the congregants who died fighting the Nazis. The artist entrusted with their design was Arthur Szyk, a well-known illustrator who immigrated to the USA from Poland. Szyk earned his reputation as an extraordinary caricaturist denouncing the Nazi regime and the artist behind the magnificently illuminated Passover Haggadah. We will explore Arthur Szyk’s art while looking at the stained-glass windows at their current home with Congregation Mishkan Or.
