In Memorial Days, Geraldine Brooks reflects on the sudden death of her husband, author Tony Horwitz, and her journey through grief. After his unexpected passing on Memorial Day 2019, Brooks retreats to an island off the coast of Australia to mourn and reflect. Through her memoir, she explores themes of loss, love, and healing. This course will examine the emotional and cultural dimensions of grief, including mourning practices, family dynamics, guilt, memory, and the various ways people cope with unexpected loss. We will discuss how we process grief and honor those we have lost.
