Many of us ponder the qualities we seek in a leader. What do we value? What do we forgive? Geraldine Brooks’ The Secret Chord presents the well–known case of a morally ambiguous leader in King David—a divinely inspired yet flawed human being. Using the prophet Natan as her narrator, Brooks encourages us to examine David’s entire life as well as the choices made by his followers. Natan interviews key figures in David’s life, including his mother and his consort Mikhal. Together, we will explore this depiction of David and gain insights into powerful leaders and their devotees.
