Madison, Hamilton and their fellow delegates completed the Constitution in September 1787. It was, in Franklin’s words “a republic, if you can keep it.” Now it must be ratified by at least 9 states. Opposition to the document appeared within a few weeks. Many important leaders were opposed to adopting the Constitution, including Patrick Henry. That began the long debate over ratification that would last until June 1788. The final tally in favor was close—this is the story of that principled and elevated debate.
