Join researchers from the Ohio COVID-19 Child Care Study as they discuss COVID-19 among staff and families affiliated with child care programs across the state and lessons learned for managing the impact moving forward. The virtual seminar will also highlight key voices with expertise in child health and wellbeing in addressing the value of child care and the importance of sustained investment.
February Seminar: Development of Innovative Curriculum on Climate Change for first Year Medical Students.

Presenter: Karen B. Mulloy, DO, MSCH Topic: Numerous medical and health associations, governmental and non-governmental agencies have noted the importance of preparing medical students and other health professionals to understand and learn how to address the effects of climate change on the health of individuals and communities. Dr. Mulloy will discuss the topic of innovative learning strategies introduced into the medical school curriculum, the results of the evaluation and how that will prepare future physicians and public health professionals to address how adaptation and mitigation strategies can reduce adverse health impacts of climate change. Karen B. Mulloy, DO, MSCH is an Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the development, evaluation and integration of environmental health sciences into the curriculum in graduate and post-graduate education with a focus on the links to environmental justice, social determinants of health and population health.
January Seminar: Conceptualizing Social Determinants of Neighborhood Health through a Youth Lens

Presenter: Elizabeth Benninger, Ph.D., Case Western Reserve University Topic: This presentation draws on social determinants of health literature to frame the ways in which youth (ages 14-17) experience historical disadvantage within the neighborhood and how this influences their health outcomes. Elizabeth Benninger reports on findings from a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) case study with 14 African American youth in Cleveland, Ohio to argue that racial discrimination shapes the social determinants of health, which in turn, contributes towards disparities in child health outcomes across their life course.

Topic: Learn more about the known and persistent equity gaps in child health outcomes, and how children’s hospitals (in partnership with patients, families, and communities) can help to narrow those gaps by improving outcomes in equitable ways. Also, get a peek at Cincinnati Children’s asthma improvement efforts and ways in which these efforts have extended to other conditions, including COVID-19, via the hospital’s Community Health Initiative.
