The International Women’s Brass Conference held in Mito City, Japan from August 14th-18th welcomed an exciting contribution from Case Western Reserve University’s own Brianna Bell, a Music Education Master of Arts with Licensure (MAL) student. Bell’s original composition, “Secrets of the Ocean,” a captivating collection of tuba songs, was selected for performance at the prestigious conference, showcasing her talent on an international stage.
The piece was initially commissioned in 2023 by Dr. Ken Heinlein, a distinguished tubist who received his master’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM). Dr. Heinlein sought a tuba solo that could convey both technical skill and a compelling narrative, and Bell’s “Secrets of the Ocean” achieved just that. At the 2024 conference, Dr. Heinlein performed the composition during one of the recitals, bringing Bell’s vivid musical storytelling to life.
“Secrets of the Ocean” is a four-movement work inspired by Bell’s travels to Marco Island, Florida. Each movement is designed to evoke the beauty, tranquility, and power of the ocean. The first movement, “Serene,” reflects the awe of arriving at the sea and marveling at its calm beauty. The second, “Disappear,” describes the relaxing experience of resting on the beach, allowing one’s troubles to fade away. “Seagull,” the third movement, offers a unique perspective by musically depicting a day at the ocean from a seagull’s point of view. The final movement, “The Storm,” begins with the bright promise of a sunny day, only to be interrupted by a dramatic storm, which eventually gives way to the peacefulness of the ocean once more.
Bell expresses her gratitude to Dr. Heinlein for the opportunity to compose this piece and for his outstanding performance at the conference, which brought her music to a broader audience. This international recognition at the 2024 International Women’s Brass Conference marks an impressive milestone in Bell’s journey as a composer and underscores the growing influence of women in brass music.
