Mission Statement

The Department of Music at Case Western Reserve University is committed to excellence in music scholarship, performance, creative practice, and teaching. As part of a leading research university, we foster an inclusive and collaborative community where students, faculty, and staff are empowered to learn, create, discover, and contribute through music.

We believe that music enriches both individual lives and society. Through innovative teaching, artistic excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and meaningful engagement with our local and global communities, we prepare students to become thoughtful musicians, educators, scholars, artists, and leaders.

The Department of Music is committed to maintaining the highest standards required by its accrediting bodies, including the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).

Our mission is to:

  • Foster preeminent research, creative endeavors, performance, teaching, and learning.
  • Support students in developing their musical skills, artistic abilities, and intellectual curiosity within a liberal arts and research university environment.
  • Equip students to become thoughtful musicians, educators, scholars, artists, and engaged citizens through rigorous academic study, performance, creative practice, and experiential learning.
  • Promote innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the advancement of knowledge through scholarship, artistic expression, and community engagement.
  • Provide local, regional, national, and international leadership in the fields of musicology, historical performance practice, and music education, and prepare the next generation of leaders in these fields to make meaningful contributions to their professions and communities.
  • Encourage service to the university, the profession, and the broader community while fostering collaboration, shared governance, open communication, and mutual respect.
