This course continues the exploration of groundbreaking women who reshaped the art world into our century —but you do not need to have taken the earlier course to participate. We will begin with the commanding images of Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman. Then we will sample earth art—a movement that reshapes nature into new forms—through examples by Beverly Pepper, Patricia Johanson, and Agnes Denes. We will examine important works by African American artist Faith Ringgold and the treatment of women in Islamic society as seen in Shirin Neshat.
