This course explores music of the Renaissance (ca. 1425 to ca. 1600), beginning with early fifteenth century English compositions and ending with the emergence of the first operas in Italy at the turn of the seventeenth century. Along the way we’ll learn about topics into which there has been increasing research in recent years, such as musicians who were women or people of color, and the development of Renaissance music in Latin America.
