For the last 109 years, The Best American Short Stories arrives annually to remind us of the pleasures of short fiction. Series editor Nicole A Lamy reads a year’s worth of stories published in literary and mainstream periodicals then asks a distinguished guest author to choose his/her favorites. We’ll read the 20 stories Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen (author of The Sympathizer) selected for the 2026 edition. Our goal? To discover their commonalities, to reflect on their differences, and to think deeply about what these stories—collectively—say about life in America in the 21st century.
