This course will explore the market system and its challenges including those relating to inflation, the national debt, work force issues and international trade. Discussion will include fiscal and monetary policy and the role of the Federal Reserve. Special attention will be paid to current economic policies of the Trump administration involving immigration and deportations, tariffs, abandonment of foreign aid, fossil fuel escalation, reductions in health and welfare programs, taxation, presidential control over the Federal Reserve and other agencies, efforts to control other countries’ economies and the Congressional, judicial and international response. The course will also consider long-term consequences of current policies and other developments such as the impact of AI.
