Popular Broadway song lyrics from the past sometimes contain topical and historical references about people, places, and events that were well-known in their day, but that today require context and definition. As an example, this lecture will explore a well-known song from a 1934 Cole Porter show, and you probably will be surprised to learn the history behind many of its references.
