2006 National Jewish book award winner Dara Horn interweaves the past, present, and future to reveal “the world to come.” A Chagall painting is stolen from a museum; the thief, Benjamin Ziskind, is certain it belonged to his parents. Ben and his sister uncover why the painting was at the museum, and whether the “original” is actually a forgery. Eighty years earlier, in 1920 Soviet Russia, Chagall and the Yiddish novelist “Der Nister,” the Hidden One, teach orphaned Jewish boys. Here, the story of the painting begins, carrying with it a hidden fable and the story of the Ziskind family.
