On July 19, 1870, France declared war on Prussia. The following 10 months, from July 1870 to May of 1871, consisted of a brief war, a siege of Paris, and what was essentially the secession from France by the working class of Paris - the Paris Commune. Those 10 months turned out to be a decisive watershed in European history. They changed the map of Europe, including the appearance of a new nation-state, Germany, and shaped the 20th century.
