From the mid-1930s to 1941, the city of Shanghai became a last refuge for thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi terror. It was the only port in the world that did not require an entry visa. Approximately 20,000 European refugees found shelter there and survived the Holocaust, among them Eric Kisch and his parents.
Drawing on family documents and photographs, Eric illuminates a dramatic and, until recently, little-known chapter of Jewish history—a time of profound despair for adults, yet an unexpectedly formative and even adventurous experience for many who lived through it as children and adolescents.
