In this course we will discuss six cases litigated in state and federal courts that have made the news. For each case we will examine the background and facts, the resolution, and the implications for our society. Included are the infamous “McDonald’s hot coffee” lawsuit (non-disclosure agreements); the Sarah Palin defamation case (libel); the McGirt v Oklahoma case (prosecutorial jurisdiction on tribal lands); the Google anti-trust case; the Ahmaud Arbery case (racial profiling and hate crimes); and the recent case involving the Haitian Bridge Alliance, which has brought a lawsuit against a presidential candidate (immunity of a public official).

This course is offered with the generous support of the Association for Continuing Education.
