Gender Inclusive Housing

CWRU is committed to providing a living and learning experience that meets the needs of all residential students. We recognize the importance of spaces that offer privacy and are inclusive off gender differences.

Together with the Office of University Housing, we offer a variety of housing options that are gender inclusive.

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a space for trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming students, students exploring gender identity, and their allies to live together in a residential setting.

Gender inclusive housing at CWRU is defined as a housing option in which two or more students may share a multiple-occupancy apartment or bedroom, in mutual agreement, no matter their biological sex and/or gender identity/expression.

Gender Inclusive Bathrooms On-Campus

As an institution committed to gender equity, CWRU has also been working to reduce restrooms that are restricted based on biological sex assigned at birth. Restrooms in residence halls will be designated as male, female, and all gender; however, residents can use any restroom that aligns with their gender identity.

A listing of All Gender bathrooms can be found here.

Currently, many residence halls within the First Year Experience do not offer an all gender experience and are not considered Gender Inclusive Housing. First Year residents hoping for a GIH experience should include that information on their housing application. University Housing staff will work to place you in a GIH option.

For the 2024-2025 Academic Year, First Year GIH is located on Cutler House, 4th Floor. These suites offer semi-private bathroom access within your suite-style pod of approximately ten (10) GIH residents.

New for 2024-2025, CWRU is excited to provide a more robust GIH experience than every before. Our newest residence halls, Fayette House and Noyes House, located in the South Residential Village, offer a unique experience with gender inclusivity in mind.

Similarly, residents moving on to their second year through Housing Selection can choose into a GIH suite with their peers. This must be completed during the Housing Selection process via your housing application in the form of a roommate group. As a result, suite-style living can be considered GIH when completed during the housing selection process.

Similar to suite-style living in the SYE, residents going through Housing Selection in Upperclass and Independent Living Experience. This requires residents to form roommate groups and self-select by filling an open apartment space during their specific time slot. As a result, all apartment-style living within UCE & ILE are considered GIH.
