Independent Living

In recognizing that some upperclass students desire a different type of campus connection, the Independent Living Experience (ILE) allows residents the opportunity to increase their independence while retaining the assistance that on-campus living provides. The ILE is housed within Hazel Apartments, and several PMA buildings, including The Triangle and Overlook House, managed by our partner, COCM. Each building is unique, designed to function like off-campus apartments that our students will experience after graduation. ILE concentrates predominantly on the individual apartment experience more than the community as a whole.

Residence Life staff continue to assist residents living within these less traditional housing options and communities. Graduate Resident Directors (GRDs) will provide guidance and respond to student needs within these more independent, dynamic environments. This new experience aims to bring forward the most effective components of the Upper-class Experience while acknowledging that some students will thrive with less support.

Residence Life, Housing, and other campus services will continue to support these residents as they think critically about their future, determine effective strategies for sustaining academic success, and ensure post-graduate planning for life beyond CWRU.

Community Buildings: Triangle Tower 1 and Triangle Tower 2

Community Size: Triangle Towers is home to 390 students, supported by a staff of the Assistant Director of Residence Life and two Graduate Resident Directors.

Physical Space & Amenities: The community is located uptown, near the heart of University Circle. The community is considered suite-style because students live in one, two, or three bedroom suites with one or two bathrooms. Each building also has laundry rooms, a recreational space, gym and sauna, one mailbox per apartment in the building, some apartments have balconies, and some apartments have two interior exit doors.

Community Features:  Being in the center of University Circle, residents are in walking distance of many restaurants and non-residential university resources.

Property Management Apartments (PMAs)

The Independent Living Experience includes the opportunity to live in University-Owned Apartments, which are managed by the Office of Property Management, but benefit from the support and resources provided by CWRU Residence Life. The properties include well-maintained and charming historic buildings. Each building is called home by up to 114 upperclass students, creating an opportunity for the formation of small, tight-knit communities. The University-Owned Apartments offer a wide variety of living styles to suite a diversity of housing needs. Hazel Apartments

The 1609 Hazel Apartment Building is a residential facility built by the Cleveland Institute of Music and managed by the same group that oversees the Triangle Towers and Property Management Apartments. CWRU undergraduates occupy the 4th & 5th floors, while the Cleveland Institute of Music residents live on the 2nd & 3rd floors. Hazel includes 2 bedroom single occupancy apartments, 2 bedroom double occupancy apartments, 4 bedroom apartments, and studio apartments, accommodating approximately 114 upperclass students.

Due to the joint nature of this complex, CWRU residents experience some differences compared to CWRU residential facilities. The music rooms of Hazel(as well as the surrounding parking lot) are for the exclusive use of CIM residents. CWRU residents should expect to use Lot 46, near the Village at 115. Hazel uses a card access system that is different, with CWRU residents issued a key fob to enter the building, elevator, their apartment, and their personal bedroom.

Other services will remain the same for CWRU students. CWRU residents' packages and mail will be delivered to the NRV Area Office in Wade Commons. Maintenance and Custodial issues will be handled by the Office of Facilities Services and residents will be able to use MyHousing to submit maintenance and custodial requests.
