About the Talk

"Gender Dynamics in Schools of Music"

Understandings about and expectations of gender are socially situated and woven into all aspects of our culture. Because schools of music are social institutions, gender dynamics are at play in every part of their functioning, from leadership to curriculum to how we speak to one another. I’ll discuss the many ways that gender influences an individual’s experiences within the culture of a school of music using several lenses including descriptive and prescriptive gender stereotypes, prototypical roles, macro social-structural issues, and micro social-psychological interactions.
