About The Program

The CWRU Jazz Ensembles, under the direction of Paul Ferguson, open their fall season with special guest Johnny Cochran, tenor saxophone.

Highlights include Coltrane’s Equinox and Acknowledgement, a celebration of Miles Davis in Miles ’26, and Ellington’s Take the Coltrane.

Johnny Cochran is a graduate of the Cleveland School of the Arts and Oberlin Conservatory. One of the leading tenor saxophone voices of his generation, he has performed with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra since 2009.

Paul Ferguson has led jazz studies at Case Western Reserve University since 1988. He currently serves as Artistic Director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and Principal Trombone and arranger for the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. His works for jazz and pops orchestra are performed internationally.

Venue Information

Florence Harkness Memorial Chapel, built in 1902, offers a warm, intimate, and acoustically resonant setting on the Mather Quad. This neo-Gothic landmark commemorates the brief life of Florence Harkness Severance and reflects Cleveland’s rich cultural and philanthropic history.

Designed by architect Charles F. Schweinfurth, the chapel is renowned for its soaring arches, exquisite woodwork, and luminous Tiffany stained-glass windows.
