Chemical Sterilization

Chemical sterilization can be accomplished by adding an appropriate EPA Registered Disinfectant/Sterilant in the correct concentration for a minimum contact time. This can be done to treat liquids prior to disposal in the sanitary sewer. The liquid cannot contain laboratory chemicals. A disposal log must be kept including:

  • Date of treatment;
  • Material being treated;
  • Volume of material;
  • Disinfectant being used;
  • Volume of disinfectant;
  • Disinfectant concentration; and
  • Contact time prior to disposal.

Solids might not be sterilized by chemical disinfectants. Autoclaving or shipment off campus for incineration is preferred. Chemical sterilization is not recommended animal carcasses or other intact tissues.
