Preparing Your Audition

As you prepare your Music Arts Supplement, here are some important things to keep in mind:

  1. Audition Requirements: Audition videos must include all required elements for your primary instrument or voice. Submissions for secondary instruments, original compositions, or traditional repertoire on non-Western instruments are optional but cannot replace the required audition elements. Memorization is not required unless specified for your instrument or voice.

  2. Submission Essentials: Submit the Music Arts Supplement—consisting of the music questionnaire and audition videos—through your applicant status portal. All submissions must be video recordings where you are both visible and audible. Audio-only submissions are not accepted.

  3. Repertoire Selection: Select repertoire that suits your strengths. Read the audition requirements carefully and consult your current teacher for guidance.

  4. Mastery of Pieces: Perform pieces you are fully mastered. We focus on assessing technical skills and musical expression.

  5. Accompaniment:

    • Instrumentalists: May perform with or without accompaniment.
    • Vocalists: Singers are strongly encouraged to perform from memory with live or recorded accompaniment, demonstrating appropriate vocal technique, including body alignment, timbre, range, diction, and musicality.
    • Pianists: Must perform from memory on a high-quality keyboard instrument in excellent condition.
    • Popular Music applicants: May self-accompany (e.g., guitar, keyboard), use recorded tracks, or perform with other musicians (jazz/rock band).
  6. Recording Environment: Choose a quiet, clean space with good acoustics, neutral background, and strong lighting. Let your personality shine through in both performance and presentation.

  7. Dress and Presentation: Dress professionally and present yourself confidently–your appearance should reflect your commitment and professionalism

  8. Video Recording Tips:

    • A smartphone or home video camera works well–use a tripod for stability.
    • Position the camera to clearly capture your technique.
    • Avoid heavy editing or digital enhancement.
    • Microphones or amplification are optional for popular music.
  9. Live Performances: Acceptable if there is no distracting background noise and the applicant remains the primary focus. Ensemble performance are not accepted.

  10. Video Duration: Prefer separate files for each piece or scale. While there is no strict time limit, we recommend keeping total uploads under 20 minutes
