Undergraduate music courses at Case Western Reserve University provide a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical study of music. Whether you are pursuing a minor in music or simply want to expand your musical knowledge, these courses offer a great place to begin.

Music Theory

Build your understanding of music structure, harmony, and analysis.

  • MUTH 111: Music Theory I
  • MUTH 112: Music Theory II
  • MUTH 319: Jazz Skills (Prerequisite: MUTH 111 and MUTH 112, or permission of instructor)

Music History & Appreciation

Explore music across historical periods, genres, and cultural traditions.

  • MUGN courses (200–300 level)
  • MUHI courses at (200–300 level, by permission of instructor)

Music Education

Music Ensembles

The Department of Music offers a wide range of performing ensembles (MUEN) open to undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines, as well as qualified community members.

Most ensembles require auditions and may have prerequisites.

Music Lessons & Group Classes

All CWRU students may enroll in applied lessons (MUAP) for academic credit through the Joint Music Program (JMP), with instruction provided by faculty from the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM).

Use the Policies & Pre-Registration Form for Secondary Lessons to request enrollment in:

  • MUAP 131 — Undergraduate music majors requesting a secondary instrument or voice, music minors, and non-majors
  • MUAP 531 — Graduate students enrolled in degree programs outside of music

Submit one form per semester, even if requesting lessons on multiple instruments or voices.

Instructional fee: $750 per semester (1.00 credit unit) for music minors, non-majors, and graduate students outside of music.

Prerequisite for Beginners: Students with little or no prior experience who wish to take individual secondary lessons must complete:

  • MUSP 100
  • MUSP 130 (with instructor permission)

Beginner group classes are offered in guitar, piano, and voice.

Students enrolling directly in secondary lessons should demonstrate foundational preparation appropriate to their instrument or voice area.
