Program

Love and War in the Renaissance: Music of Passion, Conflict, and Devotion from Josquin to Janequin

The Collegium Ensemble and Early Music Singers join forces for an evocative journey into the Renaissance’s most enduring themes: love and war. From the vivid battle cries of La Guerre to the refined elegance of courtly love songs, this program explores the full spectrum of human emotion in music shaped by conflict, devotion, and desire.

Featuring works by Josquin des Prez, Johannes Ockeghem, Ludwig Senfl, Claudin de Sermisy, and Clément Janequin, the evening highlights the rich interplay between secular expression and sacred tradition.

Anchoring the program are movements from Josquin’s Missa L’homme armé Sexti Toni, where sacred devotion intertwines with the familiar strains of the soldier’s song—revealing how deeply the sounds of war resonated within Renaissance spirituality and artistic life.

Dr. Elena Mullins Bailey, Director, Colloquium Musicum and Early Music Singers
Danur Kvilhaug, Graduate Assistant, Collegium Musicum

The full concert program will be available here on the day of the performance.
