“Musicians Health Advocacy Through the Lens of the Music School”
As performers, scholars and educators who are members of a music school community we need to address the issues of performance injury. Historically, we have devalued the role of muscular, hearing, and mental health as part of high-level performance, teaching, and scholarship. Performance injury and mental health statistics prove that this is a serious problem. To begin, we need to define these health-related issues and work to find ways to mitigate them. Compounding the problem is the fact that most musicians are not trained in aspects of occupational or public health so the cycle continues. By reframing elements of our functioning, expanding how we think about music making, partnering with other disciplines, and creating new ways of working with higher education administration, we can begin to incorporate elements of musicians' health advocacy into our classes, ensembles, and administrative procedures to create a healthier future for the next generation of musicians.
About The Speaker
Dr. Kathleen A. Horvath, Associate Professor of String Education and Pedagogy joined the Case faculty in 2001. Her duties on campus include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in music education, string pedagogy, supervising student teachers, directing the Case/University Circle Symphony Orchestra, and the Case Camerata Chamber Orchestra. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music (Double Bass), a Master of Arts in Performance and String Pedagogy and Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education from The Ohio State University.
Venue Information
Harkness Classroom, located inside Harkness Chapel, serves as both a lecture hall for large classes and a backstage area during events. It is also the meeting location for the CWRU Music Colloquium Series.
