Dr. MacLennan earned his MD from the University of Manitoba in 1971. He trained in Surgery and Urology at the Manitoba Affiliated Teaching Hospitals from 1971 to 1977. He engaged in a Fellowship in urodynamics at St. Peter’s Hospitals in London from 1977 to 1978. He practiced Urology in Grand Forks, N.D from 1978 to 1989. From 1989 to 1994, he trained in Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology at Manitoba Affiliated Teaching Hospitals in Winnipeg, and then did a Fellowship in Surgical/Urologic Pathology at Mayo Clinic from 1994 to 1995. In 1995, he joined the Faculty of the Department of Pathology at CWRU/UHCMC. He has received Specialist Certification in both Urology and Anatomic Pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and has received Board Certification in Urology, Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology from the American Boards of Urology and Pathology.
During his time at CWRU/UHCMC, he has served numerous roles. He was Director of the Human Tissue Procurement Facility for 17 years, the Director of Surgical Pathology for 8 years, the Division Chief of Anatomic Pathology for 7 years, and the Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program for nearly 3 years. He served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Urology for 7 years. He was inducted into the CWRU Urology Department Hall of Fame in 2015. He has authored and co-authored numerous books and scholarly publications.

Research Interests
Dr. MacLennan has a particular interest in genitourinary pathology, which includes the reproductive and urogenital systems. Much of his time is committed to diagnostic surgical pathology and cytopathology. His research in the field of genitourinary pathology has been predominantly clinically oriented, in collaboration with other pathologists, urologists, oncologists, and radiologists, but has also involved collaborations with basic scientists.
