Laina Dawes Concludes Postdoctoral Fellowship in Music and Identity

A seasoned music journalist, author, and vocal advocate for diversity in heavy metal, Laina Dawes joined the Department of Music at Case Western Reserve University in 2023 as a Murphy Postdoctoral Scholar. Her research examined the intersections of race, gender, and extreme music genres, with a particular focus on the experiences of Black women in heavy metal and punk. During her fellowship, Dawes developed new courses, mentored students, and continued her influential scholarship. As she concludes her time at CWRU, the department celebrates her many contributions and lasting impact on the university community.
