Christopher Jenkins, a PhD candidate in historical musicology, wrote a book titled Assimilation v. Integration in Music Education, published jointly by Routledge Press and the College Music Society.
In this book, Jenkins proposed that the standard method of diversifying classical music—to diversify demographically by including BIPOC groups in the pool of participants—is lacking because it does not address aesthetic issues that do not appeal to a diverse constituency.
Jenkins made recommendations for structural diversification that go beyond the surface-level efforts that have characterized diversity initiatives in classical music thus far.
