Gengqing Song, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at CWRU and Director of Neurogastroenterology and Motility in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at MetroHealth. His primary research expertise has focused on functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, particularly pioneering innovative neuromodulation therapies for GI motility and visceral pain. Leveraging this foundation, Song has significantly expanded his research to explore critical intersections between GI disorders and cancer. In close collaboration with William Tse, MD, he is actively conducting multiple impactful cancer-related studies, including an ASCO-highlighted comparative risk analysis of obesity-related cancers associated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists versus bariatric surgery, as well as investigating intestinal bacterial overgrowth in cancer patients. His recent scientific contributions have notably advanced understanding in GI-related cancer risks and mechanisms, exemplified by publications investigating biomarkers such as S100A8/S100A9 in gastric tumor progression and endoscopic grading for assessing gastric cancer risks. These works provide valuable diagnostic and prognostic insights critical for managing gastric malignancies. Earlier foundational research, such as studying the role of vasoactive intestinal peptide in gastric adenocarcinoma, further reflects Song's long-standing commitment to elucidating molecular pathways in GI cancers.
