Second-year Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine student Adam Rizk has been awarded the Thomas and Cynthia Sculco Research Award for his poster presentation titled, “Are Trends in Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty Sustainable? Declining Inflation-Adjusted Medicare Reimbursement for Hospitalizations.” The $1,500 award was announced during the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement 2022 meeting held annually in early December in Orlando, FL.
“Our project emphasizes the need to maintain and create models of care where we can incentivize physicians to tackle complex cases and support access to care for our most vulnerable patient populations,” said Rizk, who received support and guidance from his research mentor, Atul F. Kamath, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Another one of Rizk’s posters, “Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty: Are Fewer Hospitals Performing a High Volume of These Procedures Over Time?” was also accepted to the meeting and considered for the award.
Rizk encourages other medical students to experience all the university has to offer. “Take advantage of wonderful opportunities at Case Western Reserve University like the CrileSummer Research Fellowship, which has helped me to fully immerse myself in my research interests.”
