Secure Research Environment

The Secure Research Environment (SRE) is a controlled environment and FISMA-based security program. Research data with sensitive content may be stored and analyzed inside the environment.

The Federal Information Security Act of 2002 (FISMA) is a law requiring protection of sensitive data created, stored or accessed by the Federal Government or any entity on its behalf.

Benefits

  • SRE hardware isolated in physically secure commercial data center
  • Physical access to data center strictly controlled and monitored by vendor partner
  • Electronic access to SRE assets provided to authorized CWRU faculty only
  • Electronic access to SRE assets conducted using secure communication protocols

Customers

Anyone at CWRU who is conducting research with a grant, contract or institutional agreement that requires a high level of protection is eligible to request access to the SRE. The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Institute for Computational Biology, and the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center will be among the first groups to use the secure research environment.
