"The Violin in 18th Century Portugal: Evidence from the Nogueira Manuscript"

Join us for a captivating violin lecture-recital by Bruno Lunkes, DMA student in the Historical Performance Practice program at Case Western Reserve University. This performance features early 18th-century Portugese repertoire for the violin, utilizing techniques derived from the Nogueria Manuscript, ca. 1720.

About the Soloist

Bruno Lunkes holds both a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in violin performance, having studied under Annie Chalex Boyle at Texas Tech University, where he was introduced to the baroque violin. He further honed his skills with Reynaldo Patiño and Luís Otávio Santos. Now pursuing a DMA in Historical Performance Practice at CWRU with Dr. Julie Andrijeski, Bruno has performed alongside prominent early music figures such as Monica Huggett, Jaap ter Linden, and Mark Edwards. His festival appearances include Oregon Bach Festival’s Berwick Academy, Boston Early Music Festival’s Fringe Concert Series, and Early Music America’s Young Performers Festival. Recently, he performed as a soloist in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in Blankenburg, Germany, and served as co-concertmaster of the Heliosfero Academy Orchestra in Lyon, France.

Florence Harkness Memorial Chapel (est. 1902) is known for its Tiffany stained-glass windows, soaring arches, and exquisite woodwork. The neo-Gothic structure, located on Mather Quad at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH), commemorates the brief life of Florence Harkness Severance. The chapel offers a warm, intimate, and acoustically resonant space for Department of Music performances, lectures, and special events.
