New Vice Provost of Graduate Studies
Beginning this month, Marvin Nieman will join the School of Graduate Studies as our next Vice Provost and Dean for Graduate Studies! Dr. Nieman is a professor of pharmacology and most recently the School of Medicine’s vice dean for graduate education. In his new position, he will provide strategic leadership to support graduate student success in research and teaching, as well as holistic guidance for well-being and career development.
At the end of June, our previous Vice Provost, Chuck Rozek, entered a much-earned retirement after over forty years of service to CWRU including two decades leading Grad Studies.
Also, for much of the past year, Jeff Capadona has been a member of our team as the Associate Provost for Graduate Education but will now take on the new position of Vice Provost for Innovation in Education.

Summer Graduates: Submit Final Materials
The deadline to submit all Final Materials for Summer 2024 graduation is Friday, July 19. Submission of Final Materials includes uploading your approved Electronic Thesis or Dissertation to OhioLINK. Be sure to submit your ETD to Graduate Studies for the required format check in plenty of time to meet this deadline. See the online instructions for details.
Fulbright Info Sessions
Are you interested in the opportunities offered by the Fulbright US Student Program for study, scholarship, and research worldwide? Partnering with the Undergraduate Advising Support Office, we are hosting info sessions this summer to review the Fulbright program including campus processes, upcoming deadlines, and application support and guidance. Register for one of the following online or in person sessions:
- Tuesday, July 16: 400 - 5:00pm EDT (Zoom)
- Wednesday, July 24: 400 - 5:00pm EDT (Zoom)
- Monday, August 5, 1:00 - 2:00pm EDT (Crawford 09A)
- Friday, August 16, 12:00 - 1:00pm EDT (Zoom)

Register for Fall 2024 Classes
Registration is open in SIS for Fall 2024 courses. The Add/Drop period ends on Friday, September 6. You won't be able to register if you have a hold on your account in SIS; click below to find out how to remove it.
Automatically placed onto your account each semester and must be removed by your advisor before you can register for courses.
Placed by a Student Financial Services, these holds can affect registration, ordering transcripts or receiving your diploma. Login to SIS to pay your balance.
Placed by Student Financial Services. Simply click on the Hold link in SIS and walk through the steps to remove it.
For applicable programs, students who have not submitted a PPOS in SIS by the end of their second semester (or earlier for some Masters programs) may have a registration hold placed on their records. Once submitted, your advisor must review and approve the PPOS in SIS. The hold will then be processed and removed overnight.
A registration hold is placed by Graduate Studies Admissions if you have missing documents that need to be submitted. Login to the online application system here to view what is missing. For specific questions, email gradadmit@case.edu.
Join the Academic Integrity/Judicial Board!
We are looking for graduate students to serve as members of the Academic Integrity Board/University Judicial Board! Being a member of the board provides a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and administrators in an atmosphere that promotes respect, community, and integrity. The board aims to develop a community characterized by the values necessary to succeed in academic and professional life. Waivers for Medical and Fitness Plans
Do you have Health Insurance? If you're already covered, make sure to waive your Student Medical Plan before the end of the drop/add period on Friday, September 6 to avoid being charged. Also, every graduate student is automatically enrolled as a member of One-to-One Fitness but if you are not interested you have the option to waive this plan also by September 6. If you opted to waive the Student Medical Plan and/or the One-to-One Fitness plan in previous academic years, you must apply again if you intend to waive these plans for the 2024-25 year.
Please note: If you are staying on the Student Medical Plan, your coverage year begins August 1.
Summer English Skills Tutoring
Are you looking to improve your fluency in English? Spoken English Language Programs tutoring sessions are available this summer. Graduate students can make appointments online through TutorTrac. You can also contact Eric Moore with questions.
Spoken English Workshops & Conversation Hours
This summer, our Spoken English Language Programs (SELP) offers in-person workshops and conversation hours designed for international students for whom English is an additional language. Registration is open for graduate students and their spouses/partners; enrollment is limited to allow maximum conversational time for participants. Summer Take Two Fridays
As part of CWRU Take Two, the remaining Fridays in July the University will close at 3:00pm EDT including our office in Tomlinson Hall and any staff working remotely. Please plan accordingly.
Fall New Student Orientation
Welcome new Summer and Fall students! We're less than two months away from the start of Fall semester classes. All students who began during the Summer term or are starting in the Fall will be invited to the New Graduate Student Orientation hosted on the Canvas platform as a self-guided, online resource designed to help prepare you as a graduate student at Case Western Reserve University. The orientation modules will contain valuable info about Diversity 360, Kelvin Smith Library, Access Services, Health and Counseling Services, the CWRU Police, [U]Tech, Academic Integrity and more! Look for an email soon when the online modules are open.
Additionally, we will host an in-person Welcome to Campus event on Tuesday, August 20 in the Tinkham Veale University Center.

Also continue to complete items on the New Student Checklist. Make sure to upload your photo for your student ID card by August 1!
