Jeffrey M. Albert, PhD

Professor
Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences
School of Medicine
Member
Population and Cancer Prevention Program
Case Comprehensive Cancer Center

Dr. Albert is a biostatistician whose areas of expertise include the design and analysis of randomized and cohort studies, longitudinal and clustered data analysis, mediation analysis, and causal inference. He has extensive collaborative research experience, including on a wide variety of clinical and pre-clinical studies, and in numerous health areas, including dental/oral health, cancer, cardiovascular disease, health behavior, health services, HIV/AIDS, and neurology.

Dr. Albert has served as Principal Investigator on several statistical methodology grants from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) / National Institutes of Health (NIH). This research has produced significant contributions to statistical methodology for causal mediation analysis, including methods for 1) non-normally distributed continuous mediators, 2) zero-inflated outcomes, 3) sensitivity analyses for mixed types of variables, 4) repeatedly measured mediator and final outcome, and 5) estimation of two-mediator path effects.

Dr. Albert and his students have developed an R package – gmediation – implementing some of the new causal mediation and path analysis methods. The new methods have been applied to data from a cohort study yielding insights into pathways through which lower socioeconomic status leads to higher extent of dental caries in adolescents.
