Alzheimer Disease and Genetics
Alzheimer disease is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. It is also called Alzheimer's or AD. Symptoms worsen over time and make daily tasks harder. The Haines Lab at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) has two Alzheimer studies.
One study is looking at ancestry and Alzheimer disease. This is part of the global DAWN research project. The other study is looking at genetics within families. Both studies are looking for connections between genetics and a likelihood of developing the disease. We hope to discover genetic factors that can point us toward better treatment or prevention.
Participation
For our part in the ancestry study (DAWN at CWRU) we are looking for
- People with memory loss (like dementia) or AD
- People age 60+ who do not have memory loss
For the families study we are looking for:
- Anyone over age 50 with at least 1 living relative who has memory problems (like dementia) or AD
- Anyone under age 60 diagnosed with “early-onset” memory problems (sometimes called “early-onset dementia” or “early-onset AD”)
Joining and sharing these studies will help researchers around the country in the fight
against Alzheimer disease. If you qualify to participate, you will do a two-hour interview on your memory, health, and family history. We will then do a small blood draw. This can be done in the comfort of your home, or you can meet with us on campus. At the end, you’ll get a gift card in appreciation!

- You will review and sign a consent form with the a member of our Community Outreach and Enrollment Team
- The team member will have an in-depth conversation with you about your own and your family members' health history. They will also walk you through some memory assessment activities. We want to be sure to get all of this information right so please allow two hours for the assessment and interview.
- They will then draw a small amount of blood to be analyzed. This part is quick!
