CWRU's human-centered AI governance framework supports responsible, ethical and strategic AI use across the university. Explore the policies, institutional expectations and oversight structures that guide how AI is used in teaching, research and operations.
AI Policies
CWRU supports the responsible and innovative use of AI, including generative and agentic AI systems, to advance teaching, learning, research and university operations.
Rather than establishing AI policies in isolation, CWRU builds upon existing institutional requirements governing academic integrity, information security, data privacy and responsible technology use.
All members of the university community must use AI with integrity, transparency and accountability in accordance with applicable university policies, including:
- Academic Integrity Policy
- Acceptable Use of Information Technology Policy
- Information Types and Sensitivity
- Controls for Internal Use Information
- Controls for Restricted Information
Users remain responsible for the accuracy, integrity and appropriate use of AI-assisted work. Faculty retain discretion over whether and how to incorporate AI into their teaching and research, consistent with applicable university policies.
Data Security & Approved AI Tools
Protecting university data is essential to responsible AI use. When choosing to use AI for university work, you must follow these guidelines:
- Use university-approved AI tools. Avoid personal or unapproved consumer AI accounts, which may not provide the same data privacy and security protections. Explore CWRU-approved AI tools and platforms.
- Protect sensitive information. Do not enter restricted university data—including regulated personal information, protected health information and export-controlled research—into any AI tool.
- Follow university policies. Review applicable data security guidelines and research requirements before uploading documents, sharing information or connecting AI tools to university systems.
Refer to the university's AI FAQs for guidance on approved tools, responsible use and getting started.
Governance Structure
CWRU's coordinated AI governance model connects university leadership with faculty, staff and student perspectives to guide strategic priorities, assess risks and support responsible implementation.
This structure includes:
- Institutional Leadership & Governance: University leadership, the AI Governance Committee and the AI Strategy Committee provide strategic direction and institutional oversight.
- AI Task Force: Brings together representatives from across the university to explore opportunities, challenges and recommendations for responsible AI adoption.
- Cross-Functional Working Groups: Groups focused on education, operations, community relations and risk management help translate institutional priorities into campus practices.
Together, these groups support an innovative, accountable and human-centered approach to AI across CWRU.
