"Harmony at Hand: The Emergence of Harmonic Proto-Functionality in Guitar-Adjacent Repertoires of the 17th Century"

While there are most certainly many musical aspects that contributed to the transformation from the modal, linear modes of composition prevalent in the 16th century to the largely vertical compositional approaches described by Rameau in the early 18th century, the emergence and popularity of the guitar in late 16th- and early 17th-century Europe played a substantial role in the formation of early harmonic functionality, stemming from the need of performative theoretical concessions resulting from the physical limitations of the instrument. This lecture recital explores compositions for the guitar and similar instruments as a missing link in tracing the roots of increasingly harmonic thinking.

Location

Florence Harkness Memorial Chapel (est. 1902) is known for its Tiffany stained-glass windows, soaring arches, and beautiful woodwork. The neo-Gothic structure, located in Mather Quad on the campus of Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH), commemorates the brief life of Florence Harkness Severance.

The venue features a warm, intimate, and acoustically resonant space for Department of Music performances, lectures, and special events.
