The Case Western Reserve University Master of Science in Anesthesia Program is excited to announce the addition of a new rotation at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. UF Shands is our newest clinical partner, joining a network of more than 80 clinical affiliates.
University of Florida Health
University of Florida operates its health extension, which includes two campuses, in Shands and Jacksonville. UF Health is comprised of six health colleges; nine research institutes and centers; two teaching hospitals; and two specialty hospitals. The system has approximately 1,300 physicians and approximately 1,700 licensed beds.
UF Health Shands Hospital is a level I trauma center that ranks in the nation’s top 50 in six adult specialties and six pediatric specialties, according to U.S. News and World Report. These specialties include adult and pediatric diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; nephrology; adult and pediatric neurology and neurosurgery; adult and pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery; neonatology; pediatric cancer; and pediatric cardiology. The patient population has a very high acuity rate, meaning the patients are typically quite sick. Though CWRU MSA students who rotate at Shands will be completing a general rotation, they can expect to work on complex cases and to observe and collaborate with certified anesthesiologist assistants who are working on cases across these specialties and more.
Overall, UF Health Shands Hospital ranks in more categories than any other hospital in the state. Additionally, Shands is home to one of the largest anesthesia residency programs in the country with over 100 residents and fellows in training at the hospital. What does this mean for anesthesiologist assistant students? UF Health Shands Hospital is built for teaching.
UF Health is also in the midst of a strategic plan called The Power of Together. The plan is an integral component of the university’s culture at the moment, and is designed to enable collaboration across UF Health and to guide thoughtful, deliberate growth.
