CWRU MSA Students Learn Key Technique for Reducing Patient Pain and Improving Recovery Time

A peripheral nerve block is a type of regional anesthesia during which an anesthesiologist and anesthetist uses ultrasound to detect nerves in a person’s limb or extremity and administers medication directly to the nerves. This procedure “blocks” sensation to the area, numbing it and allowing for surgery. Patients who have received peripheral nerve blocks have reported short-term numbness, heaviness, weakness, or loss of muscle control in the intended region. Learn more about peripheral nerve blocks, and how CWRU is teaching MSA students to use them in the operating room.

Second-year Student Reflects on Cardiac Rotation at Christ Hospital

An Inside Look at CWRU MSA Boot Camp

As new students in the Master of Science in Anesthesia Program at Case Western Reserve University, first-year’s begin the summer semester with a three-week “Boot Camp.” Developed by CWRU instructors, Boot Camp is a unique approach that immerses students in didactic instruction, lectures, and simulation lab. Clinical exposure immediately follows Boot Camp, and students report feeling confident and prepared as they enter the operating room in the first month of coursework.

In late May I had the pleasure of interviewing Carie Twichell, CAA. Ms. Twichell recently began her presidency of the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants (the Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant professional organization) in which she has been an active member since the beginning of her career. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Carie’s mom worked for Chrysler and was transferred to Cleveland when Carie was in third grade. Carie did her freshman year of college at Michigan State and then switched to Ohio State to finish her undergraduate degree.
