Why I Chose This Profession

After receiving my bachelors degree, I served as a VISTA volunteer in Raton, New Mexico. This was a life-transforming experience for me and led to my continuation as a VISTA volunteer in a special program, The Vista Fellows Program, at the University of Maryland, School of Social Work. Through this full-time MSW program, I received field work credit for my VISTA experience in Baltimore and took courses toward my master’s degree in social work, majoring in community organization. Thus, grass-roots community organization was my pathway into the social work profession.
